BURY golf starlet Louisa Brunt has enjoyed plenty of success in the past year, scooping a number of trophies at tournaments across the UK, and now she has her sights firmly set on a scholarship.

The 2014 season started well for the Year 11 Bury Grammar School for Girls pupil when she was selected to represent England Golf at the Scottish Ladies Golf Associations Under-16 Stroke Play Championships.

Louisa was joint leader after the first round and eventually finished in 10th place out of a field of more than 110 other young girls from across Europe.

Since then 15-year-old Louisa has won the Tom Harrison Scratch Trophy at Ringway, returned the best girls’ gross score at the Bramhall Golf Club Junior Open, won the Hazel Grove Junior Open 2014 with the best overall gross score, secured the 2014 Northenden Junior Open by nine shots and returned the best nett score at the 2014 Pleasing Putter.

“It has been an outstanding year for me and my golf,” said Louisa.

“I have seen a steady improvement in all areas of my game which helped me achieve one of my main goals for this year of reducing my handicap down to scratch.

“I have had so much help from so many people; Lancashire Ladies County Golf Association have been fantastic, their junior programme for developing young girl golfers was my first experience of competitive golf.

“I also received a grant from the Doris Dibden fund via SportsAid, which has allowed me to get a set of Callaway Clubs personally fitted for me at their national fitting centre.”

Dad Paul added: “Louisa has shown dedication and determination throughout the year and it’s good to see all this hard work paying off.

“Looking forward Louisa would like to earn a scholarship at one of America’s top sports facilities, where she could combine her education with golf.”

To assist with her golf training the youngster has two coaches – England Golf’s regional squad coach, Steve Astle, and home coach, former European Tour Player, Lora Fairclough.

As part of her training through her involvement with England Golf’s Regional u16 programme, Louisa also attends strength and conditioning training with DNA Sports Performance.

In recognition of her continuing commitment and achievement in the sport, Louisa received the national athlete of the month award last summer and she was one of the youngest competitors to take part in England Golf’s Girls’ Open Amateur Championship in Warwickshire, eventually finishing in 11th place.

She also represented England Golf in her first international match against Switzerland before qualifying for the 2014 Daily Telegraph/BMW finals held in Portugal at the Quinta do Lago’s North Course.

The event sees the top 12 boys and nine girls in England compete in a 54-hole stroke play competition.
