LANCASHIRE Spinners coach Ken Masser is calling for his side to remain focused as the EBL Division Two table toppers look to extend their lead against the bottom two in the league this weekend.

The Spinners are currently two points clear of nearest rivals London Lituanica as they head to the capital for a double header against London Westside and London United, following an impressive victory over the latter at Castle Leisure Centre on Saturday.

The Bury club are also being closely trailed by Derbyshire Arrows and Ipswich who are also pushing hard for promotion and aiming for a top two finish.

With games between the four teams coming up in February and March the next few weeks Masser knows it is important for the Spinners to prove their promotion credentials.

“Obviously people are starting to see the league table take shape," he said.

"We’re in a good position at the moment, but there are a lot of very good teams in this league and we’re not looking any further ahead than the next game.

"All we can do is keep practicing hard, keep the guys fit and healthy and hopefully, and with a bit of luck on our side, we can keep winning games of basketball. That’s our only focus at the moment.”

London United, who are currently bottom of the league, heading to the Spinners on Saturday having won just one game so far this season.

Despite the difference in league position the teams were fairly evening matched in the opening exchanges though the Spinners were always in control.

The score was 32-18 at the end of the first quarter, with Josh Houghton hitting multiple shots, and Conor Porter doing damage on the fast break. The Spinners continued to play well in the second quarter, but the young London player Wesley Bezuidenhout kept his team in the game with a fantastic personal shooting display, and Spinners led at half time 59-40

In the second half the depth of the Spinners' squad showed as coach Gayle was able to bring fringe players into the game.

A 22-0 scoring run in the second half broke the game open, and the crowd enjoyed some spectacular dunks from Mark Rangeley and Taiwo Ogunneye. Tom Sutton and Andre Gayle also contributed well off the bench as the Spinners ran out comfortable winners 118-63. The 118 points accumulated by the Spinners was a season high and coach Gayle was delighted to have everyone on the team on the scoresheet.

“We’ve got a fantastic squad of players and sometimes the depth of talent we have is underestimated. We’ve had six players in double figures, while Taiwo scored nine and Andre also finished with five points," he said.

"We need to make sure we do a professional job against Westside and United at the weekend and come home with two wins."
