BURY remain on course to retain their Lancashire FA Senior Cup title after beating Wigan Athletic 3-1 on penalties in the semi-final.

They had to come from behind after Matty Hamilton gave their opponents in last season's final the lead midway through the first half.

But the Shakers' development side, which included first teamers Rob Lainton, Joe Thompson, Keil O'Brien and on-loan defender Rob Holding, replied strongly in the second half.

Rob Bourne equalised two minutes after the break with a 25-yard strike before Brayden Shaw missed the chance to put them ahead from the penalty spot.

Wigan then had Joey Johnson sent off but held on with 10 men to earn a 1-1 draw in normal time.

The tie went straight to penalties, and Lainton stepped up to save three spot kicks before Bourne clinched victory, scoring the deciding penalty after Thompson and Sam Burgess had also netted theirs.

Bury's prize could be the chance to face Manchester United in a showpiece final at the County Ground in Leyland at the start of next season.

The Red Devils will face the winners of the quarter-final between Blackpool and Rochdale in the last four.
