DANNY Mayor may have been missing from Bury’s squad on Saturday but the League Two player of the season was the only Shaker present in the division’s PFA team of the year.

The JD outfit’s star midfielder made the list, which was announced today, after being voted by his fellow professionals.

It was yet more recognition of his impact on the Bury side this season after scoring eight goals and helping them up to fourth place in the table, two points outside the automatic promotion places with one match remaining.

But manager David Flitcroft revealed the 24-year-old will be touch and go to return for this weekend’s crunch finale at Tranmere after leaving him out of Saturday’s 2-0 win at home to AFC Wimbledon due to a back problem, which he picked up playing against Southend last week.

“After Tuesday’s game he just tightened up in his back area and down to his glutes and his hamstrings,” said Flitcroft.

“It was a cautious decision for us.

“Danny wanted to play but there was no way I was going to risk him.”

After the penultimate round of fixtures, the Shrimpers, who travel to Morecambe on the final day, are now in the box seat to claim the final automatic promotion place.

And Flitcroft admitted he had the play-offs in mind when choosing to leave Mayor on the sidelines.

“We have already got our first objective of getting into the play-offs, so we are planning for another two games and we have been for a few weeks now,” he added.

“It’s important that the tightness doesn’t turn into something more sinister so we have acted on that as a club.

“We have taken the call to not play Danny and to settle that area down because he is vital to us.”

Flitcroft also confirmed he replaced holding midfielder Kelvin Etuhu with Chris Sedgwick at half time as a precaution.

“It’s similar (to Danny),” he said. “Kelv has a neurological problem in his back. We wanted to get him settled and make sure he didn’t over-do the injury site.

“It’s about game management. The Tuesday game took its toll, but I thought Sedgy when he came on has done fantastic.”

Tom Eaves was also missing on Saturday, while right-back Joe Riley will have a scan on his knee after being substituted in the second half following a knock.
