BURY manager David Flitcroft says latest signing Tom Pope is a player for the “here and now” after capturing the Port Vale striker on a three-year deal.

The 29-year-old former Crewe and Rotherham front man scored 69 goals in 196 games during four-and-a-half seasons with the Valliants.

He will officially join newly-promoted Shakers on a free transfer on July 1, following the end of his contract at League One Port Vale.

“I am absolutely delighted with the signing,” said Flitcroft.

“As Tom’s record shows he is a proven goalscorer and he made a massive contribution to Port Vale during his time at the club.

“He is a renowned goalscorer who can score all different types of goals.

“It is a here and now signing and I can’t wait to start working with Tom on a day-to-day basis.”

Pope is the second striker to join Bury this summer following the arrival of 30-year-old Leon Clarke from Wolves, also on a free transfer.

They will further bolster the club’s attacking ranks, which already includes Ryan Lowe, 36, Hallam Hope and Danny Rose, both 21.

“With the level of striker that we already have at the club I am looking forward to whichever strike combination we choose,” added Flitcroft.

“On interviewing Tom it soon became apparent what he was all about and what it was he wanted. He is the ultimate team player who values team work above everything else.

“He has an incredible work ethic, industry and enthusiasm to his game.

“His enthusiasm will drive us as a club and players around him.

“I believe that he is a player that the fans will soon take into their hearts.

“There has been a lot of chasing over the past few weeks to ensure that we captured his signature, and it was the sheer determination and persistence from the chairman, management team and Gary Lloyd that got this deal over the line, and for that I’d like to thank them."
