GREENMOUNT Cricket Club`s Under-11s have made history by becoming the first junior team from the club to win the coveted Lancashire Knockout Pairs competition.

The Brandlesholme Road boys worked hard to reach finals day at Highfield Cricket Club by overcoming four teams from the Bolton League before travelling further afield to take on Wavertree and Longridge.

In the semi-final they swept past Prestwich before destroying Lytham in a fitting season finale, which showcased the undoubted talent in the group.

Batting first, Greenmount stormed to 106-1 from 16 overs – the equivalent in the Pairs game of 298 as the teams start with a base of 200 but lose eight runs for every wicket lost.

A positive early batting display from Callum Hunter was completed with an aggressive flurry of boundaries from captain Evan Williams with 32 as all the players contributed good partnerships.

Lytham were under immediate scoreboard pressure heightened by tight fielding from a determined Greenmount group. They had no answer to persistent straight bowling, with Dan Stevens, Matthew Senior, Lewis North and Callum Hunter all taking two wickets each.

They were backed by some fantastic fielding with Joe Hornsby and Evan Williams taking outstanding 'grabs', along with a superb direct run out from Oliver Filkins.

The victory follows success in the Bolton League Cup against Kearsley. The achievement also caps a remarkable season of treble success for the under-11s players who were all heavily involved in the Bury District team which won the Bob Hurst Rose Bowl.

The junior team is led by second team captain Gareth Williams, alongside fellow Bury District coach John Stevens and team manager Ian Filkins.

"This is the icing on the cake for what has been a magnificent season for these boys," said Williams.

"We set ourselves the goal of winning in three competitions this season and I am proud of what they have achieved.

"The future looks great for the club and I`m looking for us to kick on in the new Greater Manchester league next year."
