A SOFTBALL team in Bury is on the lookout for new players to try out the sport.

The team, which is believed to be the first of its kind in the area, is a new venture set up and coached by Hector Martinez.

The 12-a-side rounders-style game is extremely popular in Martinez's native Dominican Republic and taster sessions held at Tottington High School in the spring proved popular.

Martinez, who moved to the UK from the Latin American country two years ago, is now taking weekly sessions at Broadoak Sports College on Monday evenings from 7pm until 8pm.

The first session is free with sessions thereafter costing £5 per person to cover the cost of equipment and facilities.

"Softball is a unisex sport and the Bury team is part of a bigger movement across Greater Manchester by Baseball Softball UK who’s vision is for it to be 'Played in Every Park'," said Sarah Martinez.

"The team is very much in its infancy and we are looking for players of any ability aged 15 upwards to join.

"With some of the outdoor sports now finished for the winter we want to grab the opportunity to get people interested in softball ready for the new summer season next year. We are also hopeful that in the future we will be able to join a league.

"We are also on the lookout for sponsorship to help with kit and facility costs."
