IT is no surprise to me that David Flitcroft has moved quickly to attempt to tie up a longer-term loan deal for Joe Dodoo.

Like every other Bury fan, I was impressed with his display in scoring a hat-trick for Leicester at Gigg Lane earlier in the season.

But that was not the first time I had seen him play.

I saw him at a Leicester development squad game against Manchester City while doing a spot of scouting.

To be honest, he didn’t do much for the first 50 minutes then out of the blue Joe scored a screamer from 25 yards.

In that moment it was clear he had something different – the potential to unlock games with a moment of brilliance.

He produced three of those against Bury for the Foxes so Shakers supporters don’t need me to tell them that he can be a real matchwinner.

What I would say, though, is that they may have to be patient with him.

He is the type of player that can drift in and out of matches. You may begin to wonder what he is giving to the team, only to then produce something out of the blue.

Bury, of course, have another player in that mould in Danny Mayor.

The thought of them both playing for the Shakers at full throttle is quite something, and I am sure there will be days over the next month or so that they will light up Gigg Lane.

But Joe’s arrival could also be an important incentive for Danny.

I am one of Danny’s biggest fans but he is the type of character that sometimes needs a bit of a push.

With Chris Eagles and Craig Jones now coming back into the reckoning, there is now genuine competition for places in wide areas, so hopefully that will bring the best out of all four of them.

Away from the playing side of things, I was delighted to see the club honour Neville Neville by naming a stand after him.

I arrived at Gigg Lane in 1986 and he was in and around Bury then so there is no doubting he has made an important, long-lasting contribution to the club and I feel this tribute is richly deserved.

It is much more fitting that just a plaque or even a statue and I know he will have been really chuffed with it.

It is also a nice gesture for Jill, Phil, Gary and Tracey and I am sure they know now just how highly regarded Neville was at Bury.
