AN unusual finish from an unpredictable winger, Danny Mayor rolled back the years to score his first headed goal since his school days on Saturday.

His back-post header from Craig Jones' pin-point cross sealed a 1-0 win for Bury at Swindon

The goal took the 25-year-old midfielder back to his days at Balshaw's Church of England High School in Leyland, where former Preston and Burnley defender Clarke Carlisle also went to school.

“(I last scored a header) When I was in school and that's no joke actually,” Mayor said. “Back post as well, just the same.

“You take any goal.

“I think our quality in the final third was not the greatest – from me and a few others.

"I think we could have taken them to the sword really but it doesn't matter, we have still got three points."

Mayor would love to repeat the trick tonight, when Bury travel to Scunthorpe.

In fact, the creative midfielder believes he has underperformed in front of goal this season, with seven from 49 appearances.

"I wanted double figures," he said. "Especially the way I started – I had three or four early on – so I expected double figures, I wanted double figures.

“I am disappointed with my tally this season but I'm glad I got on the score sheet on Saturday."

Despite scoring the game-winning goal, Mayor acknowledged the grit, bravery and resolute defending showed by his team-mates to grind out a clean sheet.

One aspect that stood out for Mayor was the way right-back Jones dealt with Swindon's pacey winger James Brophy.

“I thought our defence was unbelievable,” he said. “They were brilliant, putting their bodies on the line.

“They were rocks, they were brilliant. They have been for the last couple of games, home and away.

“I thought Jonah (Craig Jones) was unbelievable because that left-winger was rapid, he was a little whippet and Jonah had him on lock-down.

“A couple of months back we wouldn't have nicked that or when they came on strong we would have given it away and got beat 2-1 so it was good that we hung in there and got the 1-0.”
