A NEW system appears to have brought a new lease of life to Bury midfielder Danny Mayor.

Manager David Flitcroft has experimented with a 4-2-3-1 formation away from home in recent matches, giving freedom to the creative talent of Mayor, John O’Sullivan and Dan Gardner behind a lone striker.

Along with ending an abysmal run of form on the road, it has also helped last season’s League Two Player of the Year to get back among the goals.

Mayor notched his seventh of the season at Swindon on Saturday, his second strike in three away from home, which ended a three-and-a-half month goal drought.

But now the 25-year-old looks to be getting back to his dazzling best. And the tricky winger revealed he is enjoying the freedom afforded to him by the new formation.

Mayor said: “He (David Flitcroft) said we can go anywhere at times because we’ll cover each other. We have played two games with it and we have got a win and a draw, so it’s working.

“We are not restricted, so it’s good for me, Gards (Gardner) and Sully (O’Sullivan). We can go anywhere to get on the ball. It’s good and I’m enjoying it.”

However, Mayor is not pleased with his goal return this campaign.

With seven goals in 50 appearances, the former Preston North End midfielder revealed his target was always to achieve double figures.

But he is delighted to be playing behind a striker in Leon Clarke who has been amongst the goals.

He said: “I wanted double figures. Especially the way I started. I had three or four so I expected double figures, I wanted double figures.

“I am disappointed with my tally but I’m glad I got on the scoresheet on Saturday.

“You know what Leon’s about, he’s scored 18 goals this season, he’s top quality. You can play it in to him and you’re going to get it back, he’s a quality player.”
