BURY have vowed to ban any home supporters found to have been involved in crowd trouble that flared at Gigg Lane before Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Millwall.

Police have confirmed two arrests were made on the day and they are continuing to investigate CCTV images taken from inside the ground.

Stewards grappled with one man who ran on to the pitch as supporters from both sides charged a fence that separated the home and away ends before kick off.

The violent scenes followed a handful of isolated incidents at the ground over the course of the season and prompted a strongly-worded statement from the club.

“Any fans that have been identified by the police for any actions that misrepresent our club in any way throughout the season will be followed by a ban,” the statement read.

“We have pledged to work with the police to make sure we stamp out any of the anti-social behaviour that seems to have crept into the club’s fanbase and started to tarnish the usual impeccable reputation of the Bury faithful.”

Greater Manchester Police confirmed two men were initially arrested for breach of the peace but after being taken out of the ground were then ushered away from the Gigg Lane area and released without charge.

A GMP spokesperson added: “We are looking into the circumstances surrounding Saturday’s events and there is an ongoing investigation.”

Bury chairman Stewart Day had been forced to spend £20,000 on policing for the game following trouble at the reverse fixture earlier in the season.

But the League One club may now face punishment from the Football Association if they are charged with failing to control fans inside the ground.

An FA spokesman said: “We are aware (of the incident) and will be liaising with both clubs and the relevant authorities to investigate the matter.”
