SIMON Belston was quick to congratulate his brother Karl after he led Bury to a landmark victory over Edgworth in the Lancashire Knockout.

The Radcliffe Road men battled the elements as well as the opposition to force a result in their second-round tie and make it to the last 16 of the competition for only the second time in the club's history.

Simon, who emigrated to Australia earlier this year, was captain when Bury last made it that far in the Lancs Knockout, and was quickly on the phone to the current skipper once the result was confirmed.

"I got a text from Simon putting me in my place, saying we have not made history yet," revealed Karl.

"That is the challenge facing us now, to be the first Bury team to make the quarter-finals.

"I am so proud of the lads for getting us this far, but we will be going all out to go one better than my brother's side."

Bury had to endure a tense run chase after GMCL Premier Division rivals Edgworth had put on 136-4 in 24 overs.

The rain-affected game was initially reduced to 28 overs but stopped prematurely as the heavens opened again near the end of the Edgworth innings.

Karl admitted he was eager to avoid a bowl off, and when they were set a revised target of 57 to win off 10 overs Bury managed it with eight wickets and plenty of balls to spare.

"It was tense out there as Edgworth made a really good start to their innings before we reined them in the final 13 overs," he said.

"So in the end it was just good to get over the line."

Bury will face Clitheroe in the next round following their nine-wicket win against GMCL Premier Division leaders Prestwich.

The Radcliffe Road men have the chance to progress in another cup tomorrow night when they visit Prestwich in the final group game of the GMCL20.

Victory for either side should guarantee them a place in the knockout stages.

Elsewhere, Greenmount and Egerton face off for pole position in Pool Three, while Woodbank travel to Walshaw knowing victory could give them a chance to progress, should Edgworth slip up at home to Edenfield.
