BURY'S "Golden Girls" held on to claim the town's first win in their annual inter-league series against Bolton.

After losing the first three matches, all of which were played in Bolton, Bury's over-60s side pegged their rivals back in the penultimate away fixture, winning the tie 232-206.

They were well on top after the end of the first innings then after suffering a wobble in the second managed to stave off a Bolton fight back.

The home side made a decent start, but lost two batters first-time round and three more on the second. However, Sue Jolley started with a rounder and went on to be top scorer and last batter before being denned for 22.

Christine Walsh batted 10 times before being caught out for 18, Viv Anderton included a rounder in her 16 before being caught and Carol Paisley also reached double figures with 14, including three threes, before also succumbing to a catch.

Bolton's total of 95 was a respectable figure for any match and gave them confidence that they could continue their winning streak on home turf, but Bury had other ideas.

As with the Bolton innings, the visitors lost two batters on the first round, but fielding errors saw three consecutive batters score zero, something Bolton would come to regret.

First of the trio was June English, who went on to score 37, including three rounders. Sylvia Davenport had a second escape and went on to score 18 and Corinne Thompson scored three before being dismissed at first, one of eight Bury players out at first base thanks to the outstanding play of Paisley.

Joyce Roscoe declared her intent with a rounder from the first ball, followed by another two in her total of 40 and was dismissed at first on her 18th time round.

This left Phyllis Gooddy, who was denned for 28, giving the visitors 171 and a lead of 76 runs.

With pride at stake, Ellen McGuinness opened Bolton’s second innings with a rounder and stuck in to be last batter and denned for 23, however, the home side lost four batters on the first round, three at first base and one caught out.

Marlene Winter reached double figures with 13 and Jean Pender 11 before becoming two of the seven failing to reach first base, but star of the innings was Anderton who top-scored with 27, including two rounders and three threes.

One of her rounders came after falling before hitting fourth base, hitting it after recovering and receiving a standing ovation from both sets of players and the appreciative crowd.

Bolton’s second innings total of 111 took them 35 ahead and with excellent bowling and fielding, Bury were restricted to just nine runs on the first time round with the loss of three batters.

Chris Yates smacked the only rounder on her second bat, but was hit out for eight, as was Roscoe and Lyn Crawford-Mather joined them on eight before being out at first.

Val Pierce was last batter and top scorer with 20 which comprised a two and six threes to push Bury to 61 and a 26-run victory.
