BURY'S Adam Yates will compete for Great Britain at the Rio Olympics after being named in the men's road cycling squad.

The lifelong Bury Clarion member joins two-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome, Geraint Thomas, Peter Kennaugh and Ian Stannard.

At 23, he is the youngest member of the squad, which is packed with talented climbers in readiness for what is a hilly course.

Adam gets the nod ahead of his brother Simon, who was last week banned for four months after testing positive for terbutaline.

The sanction, after his team doctor failed to provide the correct documentation for use of the substance in a prescribed inhaler, was back-dated to March 12, the date of the failed test, meaning he was available for selection for the Olympics, which begin on August 5.

But Adam is on top form after finishing seventh in the recent Criterium du Dauphine and best British rider in the Tour de Yorkshire earlier this year.

Adam will next be in action in the Tour de France, which starts on Saturday, July 2.
