BURY ABC's Ali Akbar Javid added a Tri-Nations crown to his national schoolboys' title to cap off an amazing year for the Bolton-born boxer.

The 13-year-old was picked alongside Bury ABC club-mate Zain Ahmed to wear the England colours at the annual championships in the Doncaster Done last weekend.

Both boys performed brilliantly to reach the final of the competition, which pits the best fighters together from England, Wales and Scotland.

Akbar Javid endured a tough opening bout in the semi-finals on Friday, winning through his encounter with Welsh champion Patrick Mullane on a split decision in the 52k division.

There was no questioning the result in the final, however, as he won gold by a unanimous verdict following a polished performance against Scotland's Sam Allen.

Ahmed was given a bye to the finals of the 46k division where he faced England schoolboy champion Barney Doherty.

The pair met in the national final last month and produced another tight contest, but Ahmed was unable to avenge his defeat at the ABAs, losing on points by a unanimous decision.

Coach Mick Jelley said: "They both boxed well and I was really pleased with the way they performed.

"It is a credit to them that they were able to make it this far.

"There was only four boxers in each division, one from Scotland, one from Wales and two from England, because we were the hosts.

"To think that Zain and Ali are in the top four boxers in their weight in England, Scotland and Wales is an amazing accomplishment and I so proud of them both."
