ANTHONY Stirling completed an amazing hat-trick for Harwood Golf Club after winning Bury and District Golf Association’s men’s championship.

The young golfer lifted the Harry Vardon Trophy in front of his home crowd following a 4&3 victory over Greenmount’s Matt Collinge in the final, which was played at Harwood.

His win followed hot on the heels of recent successes for Harwood golfers in the BDGA’s two other championships, with Graham Martin claiming the senior’s title and Clare Macleod taking the ladies’ crown.

Stirling was made to work for his victory, despite eventually securing the title on the 15th hole.

Stilring was one down after the first six holes following some high quality golf from Collinge, but he sank a birdie on the seventh to draw level, after which the match turned in his favour.

A birdie putt on the eighth green put Stirling 1up, which quickly became 2up after Collinge overshot the ninth green.

Further wins on the 10th and 14th holes, which followed a superb second shot on to the green at the par five and a subsequent eagle, put Stirling on the brink of victory.

And he sealed the championship with a half on the 15th.

The victory was certainly well deserved after Stirling finished five under after 15 holes.

And as well as completing the treble for Harwood, he also matched the exploits of his younger brother Ian, who won the title in 2011.
