BURY suffered extra-time heartbreak as they went down to a 3-2 defeat at Championship side Burton Albion in the first round of the EFL Cup.

Callum Reilly opened he scoring for the Brewers before Tom Pope levelled at the start of the second half.

Jacob Mellis missed a glorious chance to win the game in the 90th minute, and his chance proved costly as Stuart Beavon and Calum Butcher both scored for Burton in extra-time.

Shakers substitute Niall Maher scored his first ever professional goal with a free-kick in the 120th minute but it proved only a consolation.

David Flitcroft made three changes from the excellent win against Charlton in League One on Saturday and Jacob Bedeau, a 16-year-old defender from the club's youth academy, was named on the substitute bench for the first time.

The inclusion made Bedeau the 12th academy player to feature in the Shakers' squad in the past two years.

The lively Ismail posed a real threat down the right early on, beating his opposing full-back with ease and sending a number of tantalising crosses into the box to no avail.

The first clear opening came in the 25th minute when a mistake by Greg Leigh was picked up by Calum Butcher and he cut the ball back to Reilly who blasted over the bar.

The opening goal came through Reilly in the 37th minute when he drove through the middle of the pitch and blasted the ball into the top corner.

Bury pushed for an equaliser as half-time approached with Ismail, Pope and Hallam Hope all going close but they went into the break behind.

Three minutes after the restart Mayor burst down the right channel and played the ball inside to Pope who blasted the ball clinically past Jon McLaughlin.

In a bid to restore the lead, Hamza Choudhury cut in from the left and lashed a shot narrowly over the bar from the edge of the box.

The Shakers applied all the pressure and only a fantastic save by McLaughlin denied Ismail after he made a mockery of his marker and struck a fierce effort on goal.

Ben Williams was forced into a fine save down to his left two minutes from time to turn Butcher's shot around the post.

But right on the stroke of full-time substitute Mellis had all the time in the world whilst one-on-one with the goalkeeper but he fired straight at McLaughlin.

A late flurry of Burton chances followed but Nathan Cameron made three magnificent blocks to take the game to extra-time.

The decisive goal came out of nothing in the 105th minute when Stuart Beavon turned and fired the ball into the top corner from 25-yards out, before Butcher added a third with a deflected strike.

Maher then fired in an expertly executed free-kick from 18 yards but the Shakers exited the cup at the first-round stage.
