BURY’S young guns fired in a dramatic final-day relegation battle against fellow strugglers Edgworth to secure their place in next year’s Greater Manchester Premier League.

The match, which was played at Ramsbottom CC, started slowly for the Radcliffe Road men when openers Mumtaz Mirza and Ghalib Sarosh were removed cheaply.

Mohammed Jamal helped nip the collapse in the bud, scoring a patient 25, but wickets continued to tumble as Bury slumped to 61-5.

Their dreams looked to be in tatters before the teen tail wagged, with Akil Greenidge (28), Mukhtar Nasir (29) and Sam Nolan-Massey (30 not out) all adding vital runs to their total.

The trio, who are all aged under 20, helped to boost Bury’s total up to 182-7, but they still needed to bowl out Edgworth for less than 75 per cent of their total to earn the bonus point that would seal their survival.

They need not have worried as Neil Tong took 4-16, backed up by Casmond Walters’ 3-13 and Nolan-Massey’s 2-13, to clinch a 125-run win and their place at the top table.
