BURY men's first team set the tone for a successful weekend for the hockey club as they stormed to a 6-1 victory at local rivals Bolton.

The women's improving second team also put in a decent display, taking the lead before conceding three times without reply in the second half.

Elsewhere, the ladies' first team march on after claiming a 7-1 victory at home to Stockport Bramhall 2s, while the men's second team won 5-0 at home to Northern 2s and the ladies thirds beat Little Lever 2-0 at home.

Jack Marshall-Grint turned in a Simon Major snap shot to open the scoring for Bury firsts before Bolton grabbed a quick equaliser.

James Oakes pounced on a rebound to put Bury back in front from close range before the break.

After a tight first period the second half was anything but as Bury dominated, firing in four unanswered goals.

Mattie Birch claimed a hat-trick, all from short corners, while Oakes notched a second with another neat finish.

The first team are seventh in Division Three North of the North West Men's League and face eighth-placed Lancaster University at Castlebrook on Saturday.

In the women's derby, Helen Beard set up Lorna Wroe to score her first goal of the season and put the ladies' seconds 1-0 up against their Bolton counterparts.

But they were unable to stop a run of three straight defeats in Division Two of the Greater Manchester League after conceding three goals in 10 minutes in the second half.

The bottom side, who were promoted last season, travel to second-bottom Glossop on Saturday.

The ladies' first team are second in the same division and warmed up for Saturday's visit of leaders Prescott with a crushing win against Stockport Bramhall.

Beth Topping opened the scoring for Bury but the visitors equalised from a rare break and held out until the second half, when the home side ran in six goals. Rachel Bailey scored twice, Topping added another and Abby Barber, Kate Gledhill and Zoe Searson also found the net.

Two goals from the ladies' third team's top scorer Lauren McCloskey, plus a fine one-on-one save from young goalkeeper Bethan Heatley, were the highlights of their win against Little Lever.

And Danny Quin, Ellis Attewell, Matthew Cooke (two) and Rob Fogwill provided the goals for the men's seconds as they beat Northern to move up to sixth in Division Six NorthSouth.
