BURY Hockey Club very nearly made it a clean sweep of victories with five of their six teams winning at the weekend.

The men's first team built on a 6-1 win at derby rivals Bolton the previous weekend with a 2-1 victory at home to Lancaster University.

But it required a man-of-the-match performance from goalkeeper Jonathan Howard to keep Bury in the game in the first half, as Lancaster failed to finish a multitude of chances.

The students eventually took the lead after the break with a vicious rising shot, but Bury responded in fine fashion as James Oakes netted his 199th goal for Bury from close range.

With just minutes remaining, Bury grabbed all three points as Adam Friend was on hand to supply a classy lifted finish to a cross from Oakes.

Victory moved Bury up to sixth place in Division Three North. They travel to leaders Didsbury Northern 3s on Saturday.

The men's second team trounced Golborne 3s 7-0 to move up to third in Division Six North South.

Midfielder Tom Lane was instrumental in the opening two goals, firstly setting up winger Chris Lowe for a deft deflection before firing in a short corner of his own to double the lead.

Skipper Adam Johnson added a fine third, beating two men before firing the ball home, before Lowe added his second and Bury’s fourth just before half time.

The second half saw three further goals fly in as Lane once again turned provider, with Sameer Sheikh getting the final touch on the midfielder’ short corner strike. It was left to Johnson to round things off, as he grabbed two more close-range goals to seal his hat trick.

Charlotte Bates' opener helped the ladies' first team to a 1-1 draw at home to table-toppers Prescot 2s in Division Two of the Greater Manchester League.

Bury, who are second but have a game in hand over Prescott, can go top this weekend with victory at University of Salford.

The ladies' second team moved off the bottom of Division Two, leapfrogging fellow strugglers Glossop with a 2-1 victory at their relegation rivals.

Lorna Roe's second goal in as many games and Rosie Hanley's neat finish at the far post secured the win.

Bury Ladies' third team were unable to keep the good run going, losing 5-1 at home to Roydon.
