BURY legend Craig Madden believes the home support could make all the difference when Bolton Wanderers visit on Monday night.

The club’s record goalscorer, who netted 129 times for the Shakers during a nine-year spell, has fond memories of playing in front of a packed-out Gigg Lane.

Following deliberations with Bury fans, the board allocated Wanderers 3,100 tickets for the clash – reserving more than 7,000 seats for home supporters.

Gigg Lane is expected to be at near capacity, and Madden is well aware how much a bumper home crowd can spur on the team.

“During my time we always had a great home record at Gigg Lane, usually because the fans were always in great voice,” he told Bury Times.

“It was just the away games that let us down.

“We played Burnley at home in the FA Cup and I spooned one into the top corner.

“We drew 1-1 and lost in the replay, but the stand behind the goal was literally moving.

“That place can be electric when it’s full.”

Madden has fond memories of going toe-to-toe with the old enemy.

The striker scored twice when the Shakers recorded their greatest ever post-war victory against Wanderers in August, 1985.

“I remember it very well,” he said. “It was a nip and tuck until I scored two goals in quick succession.

“Sam Allardyce was playing for them at the time, I think.

“It was a big game against Bolton. We looked forward to it.

“Our big derby game at that time was always Rochdale, similar to today, but when Bolton dropped into our league it was huge.

“I can remember getting to the back stick at Burnden Park and nodding one in, the Bury fans went crazy.

“We hadn’t played each other for so long, but it was such a fantastic win.

“It ended 4-1 that day and the whole town was buzzing.

“I always loved playing for Bury, but that is one of the games I will always remember.”
