BURY's sinking ship hit a new low last night when they were thumped 5-0 and dumped out of the FA Cup.

Paul Robinson, Dean Parrett and Dom Poleon gave hosts AFC Wimbledon a 3-0 half-time lead in their first-round replay.

Former Shaker Poleon netted again after the break before Lyle Taylor added a fifth to wrap up the win and secure a lucrative £100,000 second-round tie away to Curzon Ashton.

Defensively, Bury lacked structure, leadership and organisation on a miserable night which stretched their winless run to 11 games in all competitions.

Boss David Flitcroft kept faith with the same starting XI that lost 4-1 to Southend at the weekend but introduced a new system in a bid to stop the rot.

The Shakers used a 5-3-2 formation with Greg Leigh and Neil Danns as wings-backs, while Tom Soares partnered Antony Kay and Leon Barnett in the heart of the defence.

But playing five across the back did nothing to stamp out recent defensive frailties.

Taylor was the first to find space as he got on the end of Andy Barcham's cross and glanced a header wide.

Danny Mayor was the catalyst for the Shakers' first chance when he found Danns in acres of space down the right but James Shea made a fine save to keep him at bay.

Barnett struggled to cope with the Dons' attacking threats and when he gifted the ball to Barcham on the edge of the area, the winger fortunately blasted over.

However, Barnett would not be so lucky in the 27th minute when he clumsily fouled Chris Whelpdale down the right and a quick free-kick allowed the winger to cross for Robinson to tap in from close range.

Five minutes later it was 2-0. A mix-up at the back allowed Parrett the freedom of the penalty area and he duly tucked the ball past Ben Williams.

The midfielder could have added a second a couple of minutes later but his stinging drive fizzed narrowly wide of the near post.

Flitcroft had seen enough and made a change. Young George Miller was introduced from the bench in place of Leigh as the Shakers shifted to a 3-4-3 formation.

But the attacking change did nothing to stop the defensive woes. Barnett dropped another clanger that allowed Taylor to advance one-on-one with Williams – the goalkeeper winning that battle.

On the stroke of half time the Shakers' defence switched off again as three forwards waltzed through on goal with Robinson squaring the ball for Poleon to slot home.

Three minutes into added time Bury striker James Vaughan spurned a great opportunity to pull one back when he lifted the ball over the bar from six yards out.

Niall Maher was thrown on from the bench at half-time to replace Barnett but it was Wimbledon that continued to ask the questions, with Parrett's long-range effort forcing a superb save from Williams.

If the game was not already over by the 72nd minute it was when Poleon shrugged off a challenge from Soares, dribbled around Williams and walked the ball into the net for his second and Wimbledon's fourth.

Taylor added a fifth late on to to secure their second-round trip to Curzon Ashton.
