JACK Hudson helped Lancashire Spinners pull off a shock victory over previously unbeaten league leaders Manchester Magic.

The youngster's 18 points included two free throws with 10 seconds on the clock that clinched the 69-65 win for the Spinners at Bury's Castle Leisure Centre.

Magic threw everything at the hosts in the second half but were unable to maintain a 13-match winning run that started in March, last season.

Lancashire went into half time leading 49-28 after blitzing the visitors in the second quarter, outscoring their opponents by 18 in the period.

At one stage they scored 21 unanswered points, with the Magic shut out for more than seven minutes.

But National League Division One's leading team put in a serious shift in the final two quarters, and it took some last-ditch defending from the home side to hold on for a priceless win.

Mark Rangeley, who scored 13 points and had 11 rebounds, said: “Barring the fact I struggled to score from open play, it’s been my best all-around game.

"The guard was just four-of-17 shooting, but four-of-5 at the line.

“Neal [Hopkins] said we needed the extra efforts and I was on the floor and crashing the glass.”

A 12-0 surge early in third quarter brought the Magic within 52-43. Lancashire responded to score the final six points of the period and nursed their advantage over the line.

The Spinners converted 26 of 38 free-throw attempts, which is the most since earning promotion to Division One.

Lancashire’s Connor Murtagh had 17 points and five rebounds and James Banton added nine points.
