FROSTY conditions put paid to a number of hockey matches over the weekend, but the two Bury games that survived finished in handsome wins for the club.

The men's first team put eight goals past Leyland and Chorley firsts with no reply.

A flowing move led to Bury’s opening goal, with James Larmett tucking in from close range after a flowing passing move.

The home team smashed in a second goal immediately from the restart, stealing the ball and racing forward before Adam Friend unselfishly played in Jack Marshall-Grint for an easy tap-in.

Five minutes later Friend converted a short corner, before grabbing a quick fire second and putting Bury firmly in control going into half time.

Four minutes after the restart Marshall-Grint netted his second of the afternoon after deflecting home a well-worked short corner.

Friend then went on to collect his hat trick with a neat finish before midfield talisman Simon Major fired in Bury’s seventh.

The scoring was rounded off by player-coach Ahtisham Khan, who dispatched a penalty stroke after Marshall-Grint’s goal bound shot was blocked by a Leyland foot.

The result left Bury seventh in Division Three North of the North West Men's Hockey League ahead of Saturday's trip to third-placed Ormskirk.

Bury Ladies' second team hauled themselves out of the relegation zone in Division Two of the Greater Manchester Women's Hockey Association, leapfrogging Manchester Moss Park after beating them 3-2.

Moss Park opened the scoring in the second minute through a short corner.

However, the Bury ladies battled back into the game and levelled on 24 minutes through an Emma Bailey penalty stroke.

Six minutes later, the side's leading goalscorer Lorna Wroe pounced on a poor pass and rolled the ball past the on-rushing keeper to put Bury in front.

The second half mirrored the first as Moss Park converted an early short corner to equalise.

But it was Bury who claimed three vital points, as Bailey converted a second penalty stroke of the match eight minutes from time.
