CAMERON Burgess wants to build on his impressive start to life as a Shaker by helping to lead them out of the relegation zone with victory at home to Walsall.

The Scot has played a significant part in shoring up League One’s worst defence since joining on loan from Fulham.

Burgess was impressive in the 5-1 thrashing of Peterborough in their last home match and last Friday’s 1-1 draw at Port Vale.

Now the 21-year-old is keen to maintain his unbeaten start at Gigg Lane on Saturday.

“We want to win every game and get as many points as we can,” Burgess said. “But it’s the same story, we need to tighten up at the back.

“Walsall is another one we’re looking to get full points from. We have to do our homework but we’ll concentrate on us.

“You can see by the quality in training every day that there’s no way this team should be down there (in the relegation zone).”

Earlier in the season, Burgess spent time out on loan with neighbours Oldham and helped them keep nine clean sheets in his 30 appearances.

After his loan finished, the centre-back took advice from Bury’s 2015/16 player-of-the-season and former Oldham team-mate Peter Clarke before making a six-month move to Gigg Lane.

“Clarkey had nothing but good things to say about the club and everyone involved,” he said. “For me personally it’s about games and experience, for the team it’s clean sheets and wins. That’s our aim.”

Meanwhile, defender Leon Barnett and winger Zeli Ismail have returned to full fitness and could be in contention to start against Walsall on Saturday.
