BURY Hockey Club ladies teams took their tally of trophies for the season to three after a thrilling weekend of cup action.

The ladies' first team had already sealed the Greater Manchester Women's Hockey Association Division Two title before playing in back-to-back cup finals on Saturday and Sunday.

They won the first, beating Prescot 3-2 in the final of the Division Two Cup, but lost out to top-tier outfit Didsbury Northern 4-3 on penalties in the All Divisions Cup final after the tie had finished 2-2.

The ladies' second team were also in cup action on Sunday, but fortune favoured them in the All Divisions Plate final, beating Division Two rivals Bolton seconds 4-3 on penalty strokes after they had been locked at 1-1 in normal time.

Bury Ladies firsts were not to be outdone as they secured the league and cup double in the first round of the weekend's final trilogy.

They were made to work hard for their victory by Prescott, who twice came back to level the scores in what was an end-to-end game.

Beth Topping put Bury in front in the first half, displaying great composure to drag the ball back, turning a defender, before firing into the bottom corner past the stranded keeper.

But they went into the break level after Prescott equalised through a short corner.

Jo Miller crashed in a second for Bury after the restart to hand them back the advantage, only for their opponents to punish them for a moment of hesitation at the back.

As the match headed for a penalty shootout, defender Emma Bailey ventured forward for a short corner and smashed in the winner.

Saturday's exertions will clearly have had in impact on Bury's energy levels when they took on Didsbury Northern the following day in the All Divisions Cup final.

But it did not show in the opening stages as Topping's early goal put then 2-0 up, after they had been handed a one-goal start as per the handicap rules of the competition.

Unfortunately, they were unable to hold on for a fairytale treble.

After Didsbury scored twice to force the game to penalties, Bury had two spot kicks saved as they lost the shootout.

The second team had no such problems after the All Divisions Plate final ended in a 1-1 draw.

They were pegged back in normal time after captain Karen Nicholls had crashed home an early short corner.

And it took a brave last-minute stop at a short corner from young player of the season Rebecca Coombes to force penalty strokes.

But Bury regrouped to win the shootout 4-3.

Helen Beard, Kate Howard and Nicholls all converted their strokes, while goalkeeper Hania Nicholson saved Bolton's first effort in sudden death.

Beard then fired in the winner to help Bury become the first team to defend the trophy.

The men's first team, meanwhile, rounded off their season with a narrow 3-2 defeat at home to North West Men's League Division Three North promotion candidates Rochdale.

James Larmett scored both goals for Bury as they finished comfortably in mid-table.
