BURY’S Adam Yates was edged out by Bob Jungels, of Luxembourg, in the race for the Giro d'Italia white jersey, given to the fastest finisher aged under 25.

The 24-year-old former Bury Clarion rider, who won the white jersey at the Tour de France last year, held a 28-second lead over Jungels going into the 21st and final stage – a time-trial in Milan.

But Jungels ended up beating Yates by more than a minute.

Yates had battled back admirably after being involved in a crash in the ninth stage that forced fellow Brit Gerraint Thomas to pull out of the 100th running of the Grand Tour.

The ex-Derby High School pupil fell from third to 17th, losing more than five minutes on the leaders after being floored with 14km of the stage remaining, but he battled back in the mountain stages.

In the end, he finished ninth overall, 8mins 10secs behind surprise winner Tom Dumoulin, who became the first Dutchman to claim the Giro d’Italia pink jersey.

Dumoulin led for nine days earlier in the race but had slipped to fourth ahead of the Giro's dramatic climax.

He began 53 seconds behind leader Nairo Quintana but closed with a 31-second advantage over the Colombian, who was outmatched by the time-trial specialist on ill-suited terrain.
