PREMIER Division leaders Woodbank will head up a list of four local sides in the second-round draw for Greater Manchester League’s Derek Kay First XI Cup.

Anthony Harris’ men eased to a nine-wicket win against Division One side Denton to seal their place in the hat alongside fellow top-tier outfit Bury, Division One Unsworth and Elton, of Division Two.

Elton made it through at the expense of third-tier rivals Edenfield, who they beat by three wickets in a low-scoring game.

Adam Barnes’ Edenfield side made a steady start to the cup clash at Elton before falling from 82-2 to 104 all out. The skipper top-scored with 32 as he helped put on 50 for the opening wicket with club pro Paul Gallagher.

Gallagher then continued the solid opening to the game with James McKenzie, but once both fell for 23 runs the Edenfield innings tailed away dramatically.

The extras column was the next top scorer with six as Gareth Edwards took 4-11 and Elton pro Anwar Ul Haq finished with figures of 4-24.

Elton made heavy weather of their reply and no batsman made more than 19, but an unbeaten 18 from eighth man Matthew Ward proved enough to put them into the second round.

A half-century from Denton opener Ryan Halpin prolonged Woodbank’s cup opener, but the in-form Premier table-toppers never looked in any danger of suffering an upset.

Steve Dearden bowled the Denton danger man for 58 on his way to figures of 4-25, and unbeaten knocks of 58 from Gavin Nichol and 57 from pro Jonny Whitehead comfortably saw them home.

The bowlers had the upper hand in Bury’s six-wicket win at home to Division Two strugglers Hindley St Peters.

Casmond Walters was the star man, taking 6-7, as the visitors were all bowled out for 66 before making 25 not out after Bury’s reply had got off to a stuttering start.

Unsworth complete the line-up of local sides in the second-round draw after Division One rivals Woodhouses fell well short of matching their score of 280.

Mohammed Jahangir underpinned their innings with a virtual run-a-ball 92, while Leighton Friend weighed in with 43 and Ian Hall added 38 valuable runs lower down the order.

Alex Spender (46) and Josh Butler (38) delayed the inevitable for Woodhouses, but 4-2 from Ali Nasir sealed the 128-run win.

Greenmount were unlucky not to make it a fifth local side in the hat after a seven-run defeat to Edgworth.

Elsewhere, Brooksbottom are in the second round of the Championship Cup by virtue of a walkover.
