AMELIA Taylor swept to a 5&4 victory in the final of the Bury and District Ladies Golf Championships.

The Harwood golfer enjoyed a tight battle in the outward nine against Bev Dodd, of Rossendale, at Bury Golf Club.

But after getting her nose in front by winning the par-five ninth, Taylor blitzed her opponent, claiming four of the next five holes to seal victory.

Dot Scholes, BDGA president, said: "The result didn't really reflect the standard of play as both ladies were very much nip and tuck up to the ninth.

"But Amelia took command after that and apart from the 11th hole, which was halved, she won the rest.

"It was a great match and fantastic to see it played in such a great spirit. Both ladies should be commended on that."

Taylor reached the final following a 3&2 victory over Harwood team-mate Debbie Dacre, while Dodd overcame home favourite Jane Boxall 2&1 in the semis.

A field of 36 competitors started out in the opening round, with the best four gross scores on the day clinching a place in the last four.

Bury Golf Club stalwart Sue Warrington, who won the title 12 times, the last coming in 2001, presented Taylor with the trophy in what was the 70th anniversary of the championships, which was first played for in 1947.
