ST GABRIEL'S High School pupil Sean Corcoran has been named Bury's schoolboy footballer of the year.

The 16-year-old, of Walmersley Road, Bury, is the 2017 winner of the Wilf Ainscow "Ranger" Trophy, awarded by the Rotary Club of Bury.

He was part of the the St Gabriel's Year 11 team that won 10 out of 11 games played, their only defeat coming in the Manchester Catholic Cup final against St Cuthbert's.

Rotary Club secretary PhiI Emmott said: “Sean was an integral part of the St Gabriel’s team, which won every single one of their games in the bury league and town cup.

"As a midfield player he has been at the heart of the action.

"Sean is a selfless player who puts the needs of the team ahead of his own.

"He is respected by all his team-mates, who recognise his fantastic work-rate and the quality he brings to the team.

"Throughout the Bury Cup run, Sean came up with important goals and influential performances when the team needed them.

"It was fitting that he scored the third goal in the final in their 3-0 victory over Bury Church as this was the last goal scored by the Year 11 team.

"Sean really was the heartbeat of the team and always led by example.

"As someone who twice played at Wembley – gaining two Oxford University Soccer Blues – it gives me enormous pleasure to acknowledge Sean’s sporting talents and achievements. I cannot envisage a more worthy recipient of this trophy.”

The “Ranger” Trophy is presented in memory of Wilf Ainscow, a long-serving member and past president of the Rotary Club of Bury, who was part owner and editor of the Bury Times and covered Bury FC as a sports reporter under the pen-name "Ranger".
