BRANDON Quinton produced an outstanding performance to take the silver medal in the under-15s' 5k road running championships staged as part of the English National Road Relays on Saturday.

At Sutton Park in the West Midlands, he only missed out on the gold medal to Aldershot and Farnham’s Ryan Martin by three seconds and his time of 16mins 44secs would also have won second place in the u17s' race.

Sunday saw a large number of Bury AC runners competing in the Radcliffe AC Multi Terrain 10k race – the fifth in Bury’s Senior Grand Prix race series.

Ben Coop was the first local runner home, taking fourth place in 37:44 and making a welcome return to competition following injury.

Byron Edwards was next to finish, his eighth place (38:36) being good enough to move him into the lead in the Grand Prix and a good last piece of speed work before Sunday’s London Marathon.

Hot on his heels was Patrick Babb in ninth place (39:00), followed by Paul Johnston in 14th (40:24) and Giles Bennett, 23rd (43:06) and Bury’s men took the team prize.

Katie Geelan was the second woman to finish, with her 45:06 making her victor in the F45 age category.

The other Bury finishers included Anthony Hallahan (44:12), Steve Parker (51:32), Lizzi Cheshire (52:39), Pam Hitchin (57:17), Nicola Brown (62:19) and Harvey Wiseglass (64:48).

The weekend also heralded the start of the track and field season and six Bury athletes competed in the Lancashire Combined Events Championships on Clayton-le-Moors with them all setting new personal bests.

In the u17s girls' heptathlon, Amy Garroch took second place overall with a new best point score of 3,147, which sees her currently second in the UK rankings.

She set new event PBs in the 200m and 80m hurdles during the course of the competition.

In the u15 boys' pentathlon Jay Cook took sixth place with a PB point score of 1,592, with new best performances in the 80m hurdles and long jump.
