RADCLIFFE set a new club record on Sunday when they scored a massive 422 runs.

The Racecourse men beat the former highest total of 412 which was set by the second team eight years ago.

Sunday's super show came away to South West Manchester in the Greater Manchester League 1st XI Cup, a game they only won on the toss of a coin after rain ended play with the hosts on 62-4 after 14.3 overs.

The star of the innings was opener Martyn Coates who scored 168 from 93 balls including 19 fours and 12 sixes.

His fellow opener, captain Michael Farley, amassed a more measured 62 from 105 balls including 12 fours, and the latter's brother, Dan Farley, came in at number three and scored 87 not out from 55 balls which included 15 fours.

They were followed in by Callum Malcolm and Ryan Williams who quickly got into the spirit of the occasion, scoring 31 and 18, respectively.

The captain said: "Dan kept the momentum going with a great performance then Callum batted well and Ryan didn't waste time hitting his first ball for four.

Michael Farley described it as "just a perfect batting performance" and paid special tribute to Coates.

"He just smashed it everywhere," said the skipper. "You just couldn't bowl to him.

"No boundary was big enough for him, he was seeing it like a beach ball and just hitting it everywhere.

"And they were all good shots, he wasn't just swinging his bat and hitting it anywhere, he knew where he was putting every ball.

"It was a brilliant performance."

The captain said the team realised they had a chance of breaking the record around 10 overs from the end, adding their bid to break it added a new dimension to the game and injected more interest among those watching.

"We were about 320-2 off 40 overs so we thought it might be on," he said.

"We needed to get about 10 an over and then we needed 18 off the last two overs, and we did it.

"It was funny because rumours started to spread around the club that we could be on to break our club record and everyone was willing us to do it, even their supporters.

"It's an unbelievable achievement really, especially to think the club has more than 120 years of history.

"It would have been terrible if we had lost the coin toss but thankfully heads won it for us."

It was a different story on the same ground the previous day where Radcliffe remained bottom of Division Two B with a 31-run defeat after scoring 140, and they travel to fifth-placed Wythenshawe on Saturday.
