RADCLIFFE AC were running under their own steam when they took on the Race The Train from Bury to Rawtenstall.

The aim of the tough 11-mile event was to beat the steam engine to Rawtenstall and three of the club did just that with Chris Whittaker first in for Radcliffe in 1hr 17mins 49secs, in 15th place out of 421.

Craig Norman ran 1:20:44 and was 27th, also beating the train, as did Mike Cooke, who was 57th in a time of 1:24: 24.

The race began from Bury Station in some scorching conditions on Sunday morning on the sound of the engine's whistle and runners set off along trails and paths, running mostly alongside the railway line.

Family and friends were able to ride on the train and watch the race.
