BURY AC members were among the medals in the Greater Manchester Schools' Track and Field championships held at Trafford last Saturday.

Brandon Quinton was Bury’s sole gold medallist after he demolished the field in the intermediate boys' 3,000m, winning by more than 100m in a new personal best time of 9mins 6.49secs.

He should soon be below nine minutes as he goes from strength to strength and a faster time could qualify him for the English Schools' championships.

Stefan Kalambouka took fourth place in the race, missing his personal best time by a frustrating 0.2 seconds with 9:53.71.

There were four silver medals in total. Amy Garroch ran well to take second in the intermediate girls' 80m hurdles (13.04), while in the same age group Daisy Worthington produced a fine leap of 5.22m to finish as runner-up in the long jump and Hattie Vaughan vaulted 3.20 to take silver in a very competitive pole vault competition.

Jay Cook, competing in the junior boys' pole vault, produced an outdoor best of 2.30 to take a much-deserved medal.

Bronze medals went to Kamili Bell, in the senior boys' 400m (52.10), Charlotte Speakman-Farnworth, in the intermediate girls' 300m hurdles, and Abigail Howard, in the junior girls' 75m hurdles (12.48).

The other Bury AC competitors at the competition were Heledd Rimmer (fourth intermediate girls javelin, 28.27), Ella Tyrell (fifth intermediate girls' triple jump, 9.73), Rashawn Currie (fifth junior boys' 200m, 24.94), Jacob Allen (seventh junior boys' 800m, 2.16.4), Nathan Witkowski (fifth junior boys' 80m hurdles, 13.29), Erin Kenyon (fifth junior girls' 300m, 46.86), Grace Gibson seventh junior girls' 800m A race, 2.31.99), Scarlett Hamilton (11th junior girls' 1500m, 5.29.13), Erin Garroch (eighth junior girls' javelin, 18.11) and Jena Dickinson (eighth junior girls' shot, 7.78).

On Sunday, Ben Coop competed in the Knowl Hill fell race, organised by Rochdale Harriers, and went one place better than his runners-up position the previous year, running out as a convincing winner in 45.36.

A number of other members competed in the Race the Train event following a trail route along the side of the East Lancs railway from Bury to Rawtenstall.

First Bury runner home was Colin Smith in 1:33.48, followed by Steve Parker (1:38.08), Ed Hitchin (1:42.27), Pam Hitchin (2:01.41) and Harvey Wiseglass (2:05.08).

Giles Bennett competed in the Edgworth 10k trail race, finishing eighth overall in 46.05.
