I NEVER thought I would be writing a column based on clubs having too much cricket on offer, but recently I’ve started to wonder if there is too much.

I saw a tweet from a team last week who had gone out for a meal after their fourth game in four days.

Absolute madness! I struggle to move after one game, let alone four.

Leagues have gone the right way reducing the number of clubs in the divisions to avoid multiple double headers and to allow for cup reserve dates, but then throw into it the Lancashire Knockout, ECB Knockout, Village Trophy, t20s, junior fixtures – it all mounts up for players and volunteers.

I know many people will have an opinion on this and it is each club’s prerogative about how many games they play, but for me the Lancs Knockout needs a reset and entry to be based on being league champions and cup winners rather than giving a place to a club that finished between fourth and sixth.

It should be a privilege to get into it, not just given for the sake of filling space. Sure there is the pride and honour of taking on other clubs from other leagues but it is going to result in participation dwindling having Sundays full of LCB/ECB/Village Knockout games as well as your own league’s cup competition and third team fixtures.

I have always been a fan of T20s on a Friday night, some clubs though, because of All Stars cricket, host their home games on Tuesday or Thursday nights.

However, after speaking to some players recently, they feel the 6pm start is ruining the fun of T20 for players and clubs.

Traffic and public transport can be a nightmare if finishing work at 5pm to try to frantically make the 6pm start.

This will not be everyone’s cup of tea but perhaps it is time to limit the number of clubs entering the LCB/ECB knockouts and move t20s to Sundays, three teams in a round-robin group on a ground, one team advances to the next round.

Split the bar-take three ways so each club gets a share if not hosting the games, and make a day of it.

It would give groundsmen a slight respite, allow volunteers some much-needed time away from the club and save players bending over backwards to make multiple evening games.
