MEGAN Davies has achieved the biggest success of her career to date by winning the British Under-23s 1500m title.

The 22-year-old Bury athlete took gold in 4mins 24.53secs at Bedford.

She was third in the same competition last year and is now looking to build on her success at the senior British Championships this weekend.

The former Woodhey High School and Holy Cross College student's career in athletics is gathering momentum.

She has just graduated from Birmingham University and has gained a two-year scholarship at the University of San Francisco based on her running talent.

Her immediate focus, however, is on the national senior championships at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium for which she has received an invite on the back of her impressive form this season.

The Brandlesholme woman, who is coached by Paul Roden at Sale Harriers, has a personal-best time of 4:20.76 for 1500m.

That is well inside the qualifying time of 4:26 for the British Championships where she will be aiming to reach the final and break her PB.

Her talent has been a regular feature on the Bury and Manchester running scene since she won three out of four town primary school cross-country titles.

She went on to win Greater Manchester races and became a serial title-winner at triathlon before returning to focus solely on running.

She has also finished second for the last two years at the British Universities Championships (BUCS).

Although she and her family have always lived in Bury, she is unlikely to ever represent England should she compete at international level in competitions where the home nations take part separately.

With a Scottish father and an English mother she qualifies for both, and was born in Scotland when her mum and dad travelled north of the border to attend a wedding.

She has already represented Scotland at cross country, and while that does not bar her from running for England in the future, it seems unlikely as it is felt English selectors may not be keen to pick someone who has already represented Scotland.

Her longer-term ambition is to win a Great Britain vest which she will be targeting in Liverpool in November when she competes in the qualifying race for the European Cross Country Championships.
