BURY Cycle Speedway star Adam Turnbull put in a fine display to win the Northern Under-19s Individual event at Edinburgh’s Redbraes raceway.

After drawing on 19 points with Astley & Tyldesley’s Ciaran Collins, Adam made no mistake in the race-off with a gate-to-line victory.

Northern U19s Individual result: Adam Turnbull 19, Ciaran Collins 19, Lewis Alsop 18, Niall Morton 17, James Keenlyside 16, John Hutton 14, Kielan Burton 13, Jake Ferguson 13, Eryk Motala 13, Dan Thompson 11.

The team has had mixed fortunes in all three Northern League Divisions with good wins against Glasgow (77-73) and Stockport (76-63) in Division Two, a treble triumph against Hull (103-77, 91-53, 37-13) at Goshen and a very narrow Division One defeat, again at home, to Stockport (89-91).

The squad has put together better performances as the season has progressed, with great form shown by young stars Turnbull, Adam Taylor, Louis Turner, Harry Radford and latterly Kaysar Mohammadi, ably backed by their more experienced colleagues.

Another recent highlight came in last weekend’s Northern KO Cup at Hull.

Following a heavy defeat in the senior qualifier, an under-strength Comets’ junior side almost retained their title.

Leading at halfway, after some superb tactical work and strong gating from the five riders on display, Bury lost out in the last few races, despite making every effort to overcome their difficult grid four starting positions.

In the end the side narrowly lost to Stockport, finishing second overall.

Result: 1st – Stockport 43; 2nd – Bury 40 (Kaysar Mohammedi 13 (from four rides), James Elston 10 (4), Louis Turner 7 (4), Eryk Motala 6 (2), Harry Radford 4 (2); 3rd – Astley 37 (after run-off); 4th – Sheffield 37 (after run-off).

Results in May and June leave the Comets fourth from six in Division One and fourth from eight in both Divisions Two and Three.

As the second half of the season beckons the Comets will look to push on through the summer months, consolidating and building upon their improving form.

This weekend sees a difficult away fixture against 2017 treble winners and local rivals Astley & Tyldesley, before the next home match against Sheffield on July 15.

Training and recruitment sessions continue from 6pm on Thursdays at Goshen with newcomers welcome.
