CROSS-COUNTRY HORSE RIDING: Bury teenager Gemma Jackson beat over more than 50 riders to win the Open Championship at the British Horse Society National Cross-Country Finals.
The championships, sponsored for the seventh year by South Essex Insurance Brokers, took place at Eland Lodge Equestrian Centre, Derbyshire.
Hundreds of BHS members travelled from all over the country, each rider eager to secure one of the prestigious titles on offer.
The three championship classes, novice, pairs (both over 2ft 9ins course) and open (3ft 3ins) are the climax to a year of qualifying events.
Jackson, aged 15, and her grey mare, Posie Rosie, tackled a challenging course of 20 fences to claim the open title. She said: “It’s not really sunk in yet. It feels great to win – I was just aiming to get round.”
It has been a busy year for the pair, who also qualified for the Festival of the Hunter and the British Riding Clubs National Championships at Lincoln Showground.
