SNOOKER: Radcliffe Central Snooker Club’s A team prevailed in the first local derby for several years against their own B team in the Bath Shoppe B Section.
It was the newly-promoted A team who started brightest with Paul Gallagher and Chris Taylor registering narrow victories in the first two frames.
Chris Nicholson and Barry Smith pulled the B team level, before Dave Eckersley and Carl Mason clinched the two final frames and the match.
There was a similar scoreline at Huntley C, where Bury Snooker D were the visitors. Again, the first four frames were shared, with little between the them, before Martin Lee and James Fletcher took the final two frames for the snooker club, and a 7-2 scoreline.
Totty C were indebted to Mick Midleton, 82-34, and Ian Brearley, 105-52, for their 6-2 win, at home to Buchanans A. The visitors’ only consolation were victories at either end of the match by Paul Lomax and skipper Jamie French.
Mick Walton and Darryl Cosgrove both won convincingly to help Elton Lib A to a 5-3 success, at home to Whitefield B.
Best win in the Bury Bed and Pine C Section was Huntley B’s 8-1 at Tottington A, though the best individual performance came from the home team’s solitary winner, Lee Armstrong, 105-45.
Tottington B fared better at Buchanans B although the match was much closer than the 7-2 margin suggests.
Central Snooker C maintained their unbeaten start, with a 7-2 win at Bury Bridge. Owner Barry Mason must have been putting in some practice. His 79-29 final framewas the best winning margin of the match.
George Critchley’s 72-22 frame ensured a home win for St Mary’s over Stanley B. The last three frames all went to the final black, two in the visitors’ favour.
Seedfield B were given a flying start when Danny Tracey, 90-49, and John Bly, 94-54, won the opening frames handsomely. The villagers hit back in scintillating style through Stevie Brookes, 83-54, and Matt Gilmour, 66-35. In the final frame, the match could have gone either way, but Martin Bennett held his nerve to secure a 5-3 home win.
Huntley whitewashed Salisbury 9-0 in the Irwell Street Metals A Section. Ralph Claxton top-scored, 80-46, and skipper Darren McHugh registered a 27 break.
Fishpool Lib overcame Tottington D 7-1, in a high-scoring match. A 74 break by the visitors’ Ian Martin proved only enough to force a black ball re-spot, which was duly won by his opponent, Gaz McIntosh, the final score 105-98.
Stanley A notched a similar scoreline, at home to Elton Lib C. Stuart Thorp, 82-32, and Jonny Holt, 83-34 both won emphatically.
Bury Snooker Club were engaged in a derby of their own, as the B and C teams faced each other. The aggregate was never really in doubt after the two opening frames were won by the C team’s Jed Ridgley, 89-36, and Dale Jones, 119-49.
Kevin Bogden rounded off the match with a final frame win, despite his opponent Lee Marney compiling a 29 break. Special mention must go to those top domino players, Lee Marney and Michael Berry, who won the last game of dominoes 91-29.
There is a delegates’ meeting on Thursday, October 16, 8pm at Bury Bridge WMC.
