ORGANISERS at Elton Sailing Club hailed their club’s “Push the Boat Out Day” event a success after an armada of boats took to the water to show their support for the British Olympic sailing team.

Sailing clubs all over the country were encouraged by the Royal Yachting Association to take part in Saturday’s event, aimed at raising the profile of a sport Great Britain traditionally excels in at the Olympics, including past Elton member Laurie Smith, who won a bronze medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics in the Soling class.

Long-serving Elton members Carol and Jon Haines have also been appointed as judges for the London Games.

The couple are also no strangers to success themselves having won National Scorpion events.

Dozens of the club’s 160 members turned up at Elton Reservoir to watch and take part in the mass sail which was followed by a racing event.

Membership secretary Lisa Moore said: “Over the years there have been a dozen or more junior sailors who have reached national team leavel through the training at Elton. We wish them continued success and look forward to the next group of juniors coming through.”
