BURY ABC boxing starlets Muhammad Ali and Sahir Iqbal are on course to make it four national titles in a row after winning through their semi-final bouts in the Junior ABA Championships.

Both Ali, aged 16, and Iqbal, 17, have three English crowns to their name, and they maintained their unbeaten records with unanimous points victories at Great Barr Leisure Centre in Birmingham on Sunday to make this weekend’s finals.

Ali overcame Jospeh Payne, of Kettering School of Boxing, in the 50-52k division, while Iqbal saw off Doncaster Plant ABC challenger Lewis Booth in the 57-60k division. The finals will take place in Mansfield on Saturday and Sunday.

A host of other Bury ABC boxers competed over the weekend – at Romiley Forum on Friday and Lawton Civic Centre on Saturday. At Romiley, 15-year-old Faizan Ahmed, 46k, beat Bayan Khalil, of Bredbury and Stockport ABC, on points, but Mohammed Nadim, aged 12, 34k, lost by a majority decision to Jonjo Scott, from the same club.

Young Ali Akbar Javid, aged 10, 39k, also enjoyed a taste of the action, boxing R Rickwood, of Sandigate ABC, in a skills bout.

At Lawton, 27-year-old 75k fighter Brian Rennie beat H Gelaev, of Gorton ABC, on points, while 13-year-old Kaleem Hill lost via a unanimous decision to 42k challenger D Waterworth, of Leigh ABC.
