GFC Muay Thai, where Bury’s current WBA World Champion Scott Quigg started his fight career, had a 100 per cent success rate at the weekend at a show held in Wigan. The gym had four fighters on with all of them winning. Junior fighter Lewis Bentley was first on with a fourth round stoppage victory.

Jake Warren was next with a convincing unanimous points victory. Third was former three time junior British Champion Luke Phillips, with his first adult rules fight and first fight for five years. Luke showed little sign of ring rust, stopping his opponent in just 40 seconds of the first round. Max Staunton had a point to prove with local lad Charlie Hopper, and he set his stall out early when a barrage of heavy kicks forced the referee to give Charlie a count in the first round. More followed and after two further counts in the third round Charlie’s corner had seen enough and pulled him out, giving GFC a 100 per cent record for the day.

Luke and Max will be on a show on November 16 in Radcliffe, and Scott will defend his world title at the Phones 4U Arena in Manchester as the chief support for the Carl Froch v George Groves fight on November 23.
