IBRAHIM Nadim followed up his recent victory at the national ABA junior championships by winning gold at the Monkstown Box Cup in Dublin.

The 15-year-old Bury ABC boxer beat Mikey Maughan, of Avona BC in Dublin, by a split decision in the final to claim the title in the 36-39k division, after beating Craig Kavanagh, also of Dublin, in the opening round.

Nadim was the most successful of four Bury boxers who made the trip across the Irish Sea.

Young Kian Winstanley fought in two skills bouts in the 10-11 age category, taking on Suffie Edris and Oisin Treacy, both of Monkstown.

Both Mohammed Harris and Ali Akbar Javed lost their opening bouts by split decisions in the 42-45k division. Harris, aged 14, was beaten by Ireland’s Regan Murray, who went on to win gold, while 12-year-old Javed lost to Tieran Mayse, of Two Castle BC in Tyrone.

More than 300 young boxers from as far afield as Russia, Germany and Sweden took part in the second ever staging of the tournament.
