BURY ABC picked up a host of major honours at the North West Region ABA awards night.

Club founder Mick Jelley and fellow trainer Colin Carr walked away with the Coach of the Year award, while starlet Muhammad Ali was named Young Boxer of the Year.

Ali was the region’s outstanding performer this year after winning gold in the National Boys Club and Youth ABA championships, while also taking a silver at the world championships and bronze at the Youth Olympics.

Young fighters Muhammad Harris, Ali Akbar Javid, Ibrahim Nadim and Zain Ahmed also earned individual awards, while Sarah Dunne was recognised for her achievement in breaking into the England team.

“This was the first time in four years that the ABA has held an award ceremony for the region and I think it was really well received,” said Jelley.

“All of our fighters deserved their rewards after putting in a fantastic effort over the last few years.

“And I believe the coach’s award was an appreciation of the hard work put in by everybody involved in the club, not just myself and Colin.”

More than 250 people attended the event at Waterside Leisure Centre in Didsbury, with clubs represented from the Isle of Man, Cumbria, Lancashire and Greater Manchester.
