BURY'S Scott Quigg successfully defended his WBA super bantamweight crown with a unanimous points victory over Japan's Hidenori Ohtake in Liverpool last night.
The unbeaten 26-year-old controlled the fight from start to finish but was made to go the distance by a resiliant Ohtake before a 119-109, 119-109, 118-110 triumph.
Ohtake, fighting outside his native Tokyo for the first time, took punch after punch and despite a few wobbles, stood up to Quigg's power, though he did end the fight at the Echo Arena with a cut above his right eye.
But the decision after a one-sided affair was never in doubt and saw Quigg end 2014 as he did 2013 as world champion.
And after a 30th professional win, promoter Eddie Hearn is promising big fights for Quigg in 2015 with a scheduled return to the ring in Manchester on March 28.
