IT was a perfect start for Great Britain and Bury amateur boxer Muhammad Ali in the inaugural European Games in Baku this week.

The 18-year-old fighter, who is trained by Mick Jelley, got off to a winning start with a unanimous points victory against Moldova's Alexandr Riscan in his flyweight 52kg fight on Tuesday.

Ali, who is one of the youngest fighters at the tournament, will now fly the flag against Italian Vincenzo Picardi on Saturday for a place in the semi-finals.

After out-classing the seasoned competitor delighted Ali, from Keighley, said: “It was important to get off to a winning start. My first fight was just about getting in there, getting rid of any rust because we have been here for a week now.

“I could hear the crowd cheering for me. I thought it would only be the GB team, but the rest were as well. I think my style helps as well. I'm all action and throw a lot of shots, so I think people enjoy it.

“I knew he would start fast. I have watched his videos and it was about getting through the first round. I wanted to assert myself and make sure he didn't get everything his own way, and I thought I did that.

“I have to wait until the weekend now for round two. It is going to be a long wait, but this has stood me in good stead.

“I might be 18, but I'm strong for my age. So I will make sure I assert myself in the next round and that my opponent knows he is in for a good fight.

“My dad and my mate are out here and there's a few more coming out to support me. I wasn't nervous I'm used to it."

Earlier this week former world champion Amir Khan said he believes Ali has the skills to back up his big name and become the next hit in the Great Britain amateur ranks.

Ali has already gone one better than his Bolton idol by claiming an ABA title in only his third senior fight.

Khan said: "Muhammad has really caught my eye already – he's got a lot of talent and has already accomplished so much at a young age.

"They keep producing great amateurs in this country and Muhammad could be the latest who comes through in time to go to (the Olympics in) Rio and be a big success."

Ali, who won a European junior title as well as bronze at last year's Youth Olympics, is rated so promising he has earned his GB bow after just three senior bouts – the three it took him to win the senior ABA 52kg title earlier this year.

Elsewhere, Bury amateur Brian Rennie was defeated in his senior open class bout against Jermaine Brown at Moss Side Fire Station on Saturday.

The 30-year-old fighter lost on a split decision to the Fitzray Lodge fighter in his 75kg bout.

Former ABA champion Sarah Dunne is back in action this weekend.

The Prestwich fighter will take part in the Multi Nations knockout competition at Haringey Boxing Club in London.

Dunne will fight at 60kg having struggled to make her usual 57kg weight.
