MANCHESTER United and England captain Wayne Rooney has challenged Bury boxer Scott Quigg to bounce back from his first professional defeat on Saturday against Carl Frampton at a packed Manchester Arena.

Quigg lost on a split points decision, suffering a broken jaw in the process, with keen boxing fan Rooney watching on ringside.

And Quigg revealed after the fight Rooney offered words of support in the dressing room following his first loss in 34 bouts and almost nine years as a professional.

Quigg said: "He (Rooney) told me to keep my chin up.

"I said I will have to keep it straight first at the minute.

"He said he had lost Champions League finals and it hurts but you have to learn from it and come back stronger

"Words like that from someone of his stature spur me on and I am grateful to him."

Promoter Eddie Hearn added: "A special thank you goes to Wayne Rooney who spent a lot of time with him, telling Scott to keep his chin up."
