BURY Amateur Boxing Club's production line of young talent shows no sign of abating after Adil Iqbal and Saif Qureshi fought their way through to finals of the National Junior Novices Championships.

Both boxers had to do it the hard way, winning through two fights in four days to qualify, following up victories in the quarter-finals at the Doncaster Dome last Thursday by returning to make it through the semi-finals at the same venue on Sunday.

Iqbal, aged 15, earned a unanimous decision from the judges as he beat Marshall Gott, of Parson's Cross, on points in the last eight of the 57k class A division.

He then stopped Anthony Atherton, of West Wirral ABC, in the second round of his semi-final bout.

Qureshi, aged 16, also won on points in the quarter-finals, beating Michael Murtagh, of Highfield, in the 66k class B division.

His route through the semi-finals was less clear, overcoming Gunnar Lyons, of Aston ABC, by a split decision.

Coach Jelley said: "Saif had to battle back because it looked like he lost the opening round of his semi-final bout, but he definitely deserved the decision as I think he clearly won the next two rounds.

"Both boys have done tremendously well to get this far and are now just one fight away from a national title."

The finals will be held this weekend, with the venue still to be confirmed at the time Bury Times went to print.
