IBRAHIM Nadim overcame a major obstacle in his bid to become National Boys and Girls Club Association champion after beating rival Connor Kelsall in the quarter-finals.

Bury ABC boxer Nadim, aged 17, booked his place in the last four on points after earning a unanimous decision from the judges in their 46-49kg Class C bout in Croxteth on Saturday.

His opponent, from Tomhill ABC, had won two of their previous four fights, while Nadim had won their last meeting on a split decision in the same championships last year.

Coach Mick Jelley said: "There are about four lads in the country capable of winning this belt and Connor was one of them.

"I was very pleased with Ibrahim because he fully deserved the unanimous decision.

"This is a big hurdle out of the way now, so I am really chuffed for him. Fingers crossed the club will soon be celebrating another national champion."

Nadim has been here before, however, losing in the final last year. His go one step further continues this Sunday with the semi-finals, which will again be held in Croxteth.

Elsewhere, Bury ABC's women's international Sarah Dunne was unable to keep her winning run.

After helping the England team beat Scotland in an international match the previous weekend, the 28-year-old 60kg boxer lost out by a split decision in a prize fight for the English Belt in London.

And Patrick Gaynor, aged 14, took part in a 46kg skills bout against L Haigh, of Fox ABC, at the Lightbowne Centre in Moston.
