BURY ABC boxer Ibrahim Nadeem joined the club's long list of national champions on Friday night.

The 17-year-old fighter won the National Association of Boys and Girls Club title on points in the 46-49kg class C division.

He earned a unanimous decision from the judges after winning every round of his contest with Kerim Agius, aged 18, of Dagenham ABC.

The victory - Nadeem's first national crown after losing in two finals last year - ensured the teenager would follow in the footsteps of Bury ABC's most famous son, Amir Khan, who won the same title at the same venue in Bridlington as a youngster.

Coach Mick Jelley, who also guided the early career of Khan and former world champion Scott Quigg, was impressed with Nadeem's display.

"He fought a really good fight against a strong opponent who was a year older, so I'm really pleased," said Jelley.

"Ibrahim just outboxed him, won every round and showed his class - he was absolutely brilliant.

"He was a bit tired by the end of the third round but won the first two by a mile.

"The ref gave his opponent a standing count in the second round and I thought he was going to stop the fight, but Ibrahim just couldn't find that final punch to finish him off.

"It was really impressive.

"A number of other coaches from top clubs, whose opinion I really respect, came up to me after the fight to say how impressive a performance it was.

"That really doesn't happen as much as you might think, so when it does it says a lot."

Muhammad Ali, another former national champion from the Bury ABC stable who fought for Team GB at the Rio Olympics, was honoured this week by the Veteran Boxers Association of Greater Manchester as the region's fighter of the year.
